Pedestrian deaths in the U.S. have soared since 2010 and now represent one in six traffic fatalities. But the danger is not evenly distributed, with great disparities in who the victims are and where they reside.
Smart Cities Dive set out to investigate pedestrian safety issues with a team of journalists who, over several months, dug into the data and spoke with city leaders, safety advocates, government organizations and independent experts to understand the problem and what cities are doing to reduce pedestrian deaths.
In this three-part series, we uncover the racial and geographical inequities of pedestrian deaths, see what cities are doing to improve pedestrian safety, and examine programs like Complete Streets, Vision Zero, the National Roadway Safety Strategy and the $5 billion Safe Streets and Roads for All federal grant program.
